Plumbing Directory Listings (Citation Sources)

A plumbing directory listing, also called a citation, is a mention of a business’s name, address, and phone number (NAP) on a third-party platform such as Google Business Profile and Yelp. Search engines cross-reference these mentions to confirm a plumbing company’s location and legitimacy, and AI search tools draw on the same listings to decide which businesses to recommend in response to a local query.

Many directory links use nofollow, ugc, or similar link attributes. Google treats these attributes as ranking hints, rather than passing through the full equity you’d find in editorial backlinks. For local citations, however, the listing can have value beyond the backlink itself by establishing a business’s identity, location, contact information, reviews, and presence on platforms consumers and search systems use.

A Note on Angi and HomeAdvisor

Angi and HomeAdvisor are worth maintaining, but plumbers should know that they are not completely separate companies. HomeAdvisor became part of the same company as Angie’s List in 2017, and that company later rebranded as Angi. The two platforms still operate under separate names and can each display a plumbing company’s information, so it makes sense to check and maintain listings on both.

Social Profiles

Social Media Listings

Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube profiles can function as business citations, confirming business identity and contact information across additional platforms. They carry the added benefit of supporting direct customer engagement, which pure directory listings don’t offer.

Listing Standards

Keeping Listings Accurate, Complete, Consistent, and Consolidated

Every plumbing business listing should meet four standards, each addressing a distinct risk to search visibility.

Accurate

The name, address, and phone number match what appears on the business’s own website exactly, since even a suite number discrepancy can register as a mismatch.

Complete

Filling out relevant available fields such as categories, hours, services, description, and photos. Google says complete and accurate business information can improve a profile’s likelihood of appearing in relevant local results.

Consistent

The same core business identity appears everywhere. Minor formatting differences such as “St.” versus “Street” are generally less important than substantive conflicts involving the business name, address, phone number, website, or operating status.

Consolidated

Duplicate listings on the same directory are merged into one, since duplicates can fragment reviews, confuse customers and platforms, and create competing or suppressed profiles for the same business.

Duplicate Removal

Finding and removing duplicate listings follows a consistent process:

  1. Search each major directory by business name and by phone number separately, since duplicates often surface under a variant name but a matching number

  2. Flag every result that shares a phone number or address with the business’s verified listing

  3. On directories with self-service merge tools, such as Google Business Profile, request a merge directly through the platform

  4. On directories without a merge tool, claim the duplicate and either update it to redirect customers to the primary listing or request removal through the site’s support contact

  5. Recheck the directory 30 to 60 days later, since aggregator-fed duplicates can reappear if the aggregator’s underlying record wasn’t corrected at the source

AI Search

How Citations Show Up in AI Search Results

Google Business Profile and Yelp together account for more than two-thirds of the sources AI systems cite when answering plumbing-related local search queries, according to BrightLocal’s August 2026 analysis of nearly two million AI citations across Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, and ChatGPT.

54% of plumbing AI citations: Google Business Profile
~14% of plumbing AI citations: Yelp

In that plumbing-specific breakdown, Google Business Profile alone accounted for 54% of citations and Yelp for close to 14%, with Facebook, Angi, HomeAdvisor, the Better Business Bureau, Trustpilot, and MapQuest each contributing a smaller but consistent share.

AI systems can access local business information differently from a traditional search engine crawling a directory page. Major AI platforms increasingly have direct access to structured local-business data, such as Google’s integration of Gemini with Google Business Profile and Maps and ChatGPT’s access to Yelp data. This means an out-of-date or duplicate listing on a heavily cited platform like Google Business Profile or Yelp can surface incorrect information in an AI-generated response.

Our Services

Citation Management for Plumbers

At Plumbing Webmasters, business listing and citation management is included in our monthly SEO services plan.

Directory listings remain a foundational, low-cost step in local plumbing SEO, but the platforms worth prioritizing in 2026 are narrower and more specific than a long undifferentiated list suggests. Google Business Profile and Yelp should be priorities for plumbing companies because they are prominent sources of local business information in both traditional search and AI-generated results.

Beyond these major platforms, keep your business name, address, phone number, hours, and other key information accurate wherever your company is listed. Having correct information on the directories people and AI systems actually use is more valuable than simply trying to accumulate the largest possible number of citations.
